Artist Statement

With an interest in the theory and practice of minimalism, post-minimalism, hard edge, and constructivism, I explore the connections between artificial, real, and constructed images by borrowing from familiar visual iconography. My creative strategy enables new interpretations of established visual narratives, prompting us to reconsider our place in the world in relation to the history, narratives, and visual information we consume. In an era where technology allows us to recreate and manipulate any architectural data into visual representations, I aim to offer a structured yet simple interpretation of the world we construct around us and provide the viewer with a moment to contemplate and reflect on their situation. I examine the fragmented distortion of brutalist architecture, often encountered in contemporary cinematography, and the presence/ absence of form is a crucial element in my most recent work. Without a deliberate absence, there would be no contrast, no tension, and no opportunity for the viewer to explore the boundaries between presence and absence, form and formlessness. Through this exploration of negative/ positive space, I encourage the audience to reflect not only on their own spatial and existential experiences but also on the fragmented, fleeting nature of attention in the digital age.

In addition to my solo practice, I collaborate with the British installation artist Helen Stringfellow as part of the art partnership tectonic industries. Via this partnership, I have exhibited widely across the USA, Europe, and New Zealand. I have also written three novels, that you can explore in the writing section in the navigation banner. I was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, where I began my creative studies at the Copenhagen Art School. I continued my education at the Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland, UK, obtaining a Bachelor of Fine Art (Hons) and a Master of Fine Art in Sculpture. After graduating from art college, I moved to the USA and spent over a decade in Minneapolis, MN, where I taught sculpture at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. I then spent a year and a half in Auckland, New Zealand, serving as the Head of Visual Art at Auckland University of Technology. I returned to the USA in 2014, live in Portland, ME, and work as an Associate Professor of Fine Arts at Southern Maine Community College.
